SABRINA SAMPERE | PORT AND URBAN SCENE | SKETCH FROM LIFE (1998) | CHARCOAL

The vibrant atmosphere of the port captured with the immediacy of charcoal drawing by one of the most interesting material artists on the Catalan scene.

HISTORY AND CURATORIAL ANALYSIS

The Skeleton of the Work: Sabrina Sampere (Barcelona) is recognized today for her textural, dense painting, full of sands and pigments. However, to arrive at abstract texture, one must first master structure. This 1998 drawing is a testament to that foundation: a sketch from life where the artist captures the energy of a port city (probably Barcelona) with admirable economy of means.

Visual Analysis: The Rhythm of the City . The composition is divided into two narrative planes. In the foreground, the deck of a boat, with its technical elements (ropes, gas cylinders, structures) rendered with a dense, black, and oily charcoal stroke that anchors the viewer's gaze. In the background, behind a wall or dock, urban life unfolds: cars, pedestrians, and commercial signs (partially legible, "NAUTIC... ") sketched with a much lighter and more atmospheric stroke.

Sampere uses charcoal in all its forms: the sharp line to define the ship's architecture and the blending stump (or his finger) to create shadows and the sensation of movement and smoke in the street. It is an atmospheric work, gray and silvery, that captures the damp light of the port.

WHY IS THIS PIECE AN OPPORTUNITY?

  • A Rarity in Her Production: The market is accustomed to seeing Sampere's textured canvases. Finding a figurative drawing from the late 90s is like gaining access to the artist's "workshop," to her way of seeing before abstracting.

  • Generous Format: Measuring 56 x 40 cm, this is a substantial work on paper. Framed, it becomes a piece of great presence (approx. 70 x 55 cm).

  • Industrial/Loft Aesthetic: The port theme and the black and white of the charcoal fit perfectly into industrial, minimalist or masculine style decorations.

  • Entry Price: Allows you to own an original (unique piece) from an established gallery artist for a fraction of the cost of her canvases.

THE WORKSHOP NOTE

I like this work because it's "film noir." It has the atmosphere of a detective novel, of a bustling, noisy port. The contrast between the static solidity of the ship in the foreground and the chaos of the cars in the background is very well done. It's a perfect piece for anyone who appreciates drawing in its purest form, without the "makeup" of color.
