This 19th-century religious painting, in the Spanish tradition, depicts Saint Teresa of Jesus in a moment of intimate spiritual recollection. The saint is shown kneeling before a prie-dieu, with her hands clasped and her gaze raised, accompanied by a prayer book and a rosary that hangs delicately from the piece of furniture.
The scene captures one of the most characteristic images of Teresian spirituality: prayer understood as an inner encounter with the divine. Far from grand compositions of ecstasy and supernatural apparitions, here the religious experience is expressed through a restrained gesture, silence, and the concentration on her face.
The pictorial treatment retains a marked Baroque heritage, especially in the contrasts between the dark Carmelite veil, the warm tones of the habit, and the light that envelops the face and hands. Ochres, earth tones, and browns dominate a composition with an austere atmosphere, while the background architecture and the prie-dieu help situate the figure within a conventual space.
The work belongs to the tradition of devotional painting that kept the religious models of previous centuries alive during the 19th century. Its conception responds to an intimate and contemplative sensibility, intended to foster the viewer's spiritual identification with the figure of the saint.
Saint Teresa of Jesus (1515–1582), writer, mystic, and reformer of the Carmelite Order, is one of the fundamental personalities of Spanish spirituality. Her iconography achieved extraordinary dissemination in religious painting and continued to be reinterpreted in later centuries.
The painting is presented in an elaborate dark-finished carved wood frame, decorated with geometric interlace and a border of small rounded moldings. The ensemble possesses an ornamental presence particularly suitable for a collection of antique painting or sacred art.

Workshop Note
The joined hands, held close to the face, focus the gesture of prayer. The pale cloak contrasts with the brown habit and dark veil, visually linking the figure to the open book on the table. The rosary forms a line of beads descending over the edge of the furniture, while architectural elements in the background place the scene indoors.
